The big three: university-affiliated programs

1. NTU Mandarin Training Center (MTC)

Location: National Taiwan University campus, Da'an District Cost: about NT$42,000 per 10-week term (about $1,300) Class size: 8 to 15 students Schedule: Monday to Friday, 3 hours a day (morning or afternoon sections)

NTU's MTC is one of the most prestigious Mandarin programs in Taiwan, training diplomats, journalists, and academics for decades. The teaching is structured and thorough, heavy on reading and writing, with dedicated conversation classes.

What is great about it:

• The NTU campus is beautiful, and you get access to university facilities (library, gym, cafeterias)
• Your classmates tend to be serious students, many on scholarships or preparing for graduate study
• The MTC's own textbook series is well-designed and used by other schools as a reference
• Da'an is one of Taipei's best neighborhoods for food and coffee

What to watch for:

• Classes are 3 hours a day, lighter than some competitors, so you will need to self-study to make fast progress
• Enrollment is competitive, so apply early, since spots fill fast for fall and spring terms
• The academic tone means fewer school-organized social activities, so you will build your own social life

2. NTNU Mandarin Training Workshop (MTW)

Location: National Taiwan Normal University, Da'an District Cost: about NT$45,000 per 10-week term (about $1,400) Class size: 10 to 20 students Schedule: Monday to Friday, 3 to 4 hours a day plus mandatory conversation practice

NTNU's program is the largest Mandarin center in Taiwan and arguably the most well-rounded. NTNU is a teaching university, training teachers is literally what it does, and it shows in the quality of instruction.

• Conversation-practice sessions (called "conversation partners") pair you with Taiwanese students who want to practice English, so free speaking practice is built into your schedule
• More class hours than NTU (3 to 4 hours a day versus 3)
• Known for excellent, experienced teachers, many with 10 or more years there
• Strong TOCFL preparation if you want to take the proficiency exam

What to watch for:

• Slightly more expensive than NTU's MTC
• Classes can be larger (up to 20 students in peak terms)
• The NTNU campus is smaller and less scenic than NTU's

3. Chinese Culture University (CCU) Mandarin Center

Location: Yangmingshan (hillside campus in northern Taipei) Cost: about NT$35,000 per 10-week term (about $1,100) Class size: 6 to 12 students Schedule: Monday to Friday, 3 hours a day

CCU's Mandarin center is the hidden gem. Set on a gorgeous hillside campus in Yangmingshan, think misty mountains, hiking trails, and hot springs, it is the quietest and most affordable of the three major university programs.

What is great about it:

• The smallest class sizes of the big three, so more individual attention
• A beautiful, peaceful campus away from the chaos of central Taipei
• The cheapest of the three major programs
• Yangmingshan is great for students who want a focused study environment

What to watch for:

• The location is remote, 40 to 50 minutes from central Taipei by bus, which is great for studying and less great for nightlife
• Fewer fellow international students than NTU or NTNU, which can mean less community support
• Less name recognition on your resume than NTU

Private language schools

If university programs do not fit your schedule or budget, Taipei has several quality private schools:

Mandarin Center (formerly International Chinese Language Center)

Intensive versus part-time: which should you choose?

Intensive programs (4 to 5 hours a day):

• You will reach conversational Mandarin in 3 to 4 months
• Best for students whose primary goal is language learning
• Leaves less time for tourism and socializing, but more immersion overall
• Most university programs are intensive

Part-time programs (2 to 3 hours a day):

• Better if you are also pursuing a degree or working
• Slower progress, expect 6 to 9 months to reach conversational level

Visa requirements for language students

This is a common question, so let us be clear:

• Under 6 months: you can often enter on a visitor visa or visa-free (depending on your nationality). Check with the school about extending your stay.

1. What is your primary goal?

• Rapid Mandarin improvement: NTNU MTW or an intensive private program
• Prestige and academic environment: NTU MTC

2. How long are you staying?

• 3 months or less: any program works; consider a part-time option to enjoy Taiwan
• 6 to 12 months: go intensive, since you need the hours
• 1 year or more: start intensive, then consider switching to part-time once you are conversational

3. What is your budget?

• Under NT$40,000 a term: CCU or a private school
• NT$40,000 to NT$50,000 a term: NTU MTC or NTNU MTW
• Over NT$50,000 a term: premium private programs
